Guilty Pleasure is a Fun Obsession

Indulgence Regardless of Guilt

Guilty Pleasure is something you indulge in regardless of the guilt. The guilt ranges from mild to severe. There are ways to experience the pleasure without remorse.

Many people have expressed favoritism toward "Two Bodies in the Lab" from the TV show Bones. This episode shows Brennan and Booth tracking down her attempted killer and a shared "Guilty Pleasure" moment. From the moment the song started playing, we were privy to a private dance and air guitar performance that came from their shared love of the song " Hot Blooded " sung by Foreigner.

Movies are a wonderful opportunity to indulge. Marcus Albers writes about some Sci-Fi Flicks. Of all film genres, most guilty pleasures seem to come from the Sci-Fi genre. When you give directors a big budget and a handful of well-know actors, they think that they can do no wrong. Often, their first mistake is that very thought. The result is a film that manages to catch the universal ire of the critical circles. Yet, these movies will often end up making mega-bucks at the box office. But there is something about these films that make fans pop the DVDs in or flip over to the movie networks when they are on, and watch with more enjoyment than any critically-acclaimed indie flick ever could.

Guilty pleasures are harmless enough, unless they escalate into full-blown guilt. This is a common cause for sleepless nights. Especially when people indulge instead of achieving a goal, they consider productive. If this happens to you, take the advice of James J Messina, PhD, a licensed psychologist, who wrote an in-depth article about "Letting Go of Shame".

1. Here is a list of the root causes of guilt:

  • Irrational beliefs
  • Sense of over-responsibility
  • People-pleasing behaviors
  • Rescuing behaviors
  • Enabling behaviors
  • Insecurity
  • Perfectionism
  • Manipulation by others
  • Feelings of loss of personal control

2. Part of his solution is to journal and here are a few of his suggestions. In your journal, consider the following:

A. What fears are blocking you at this moment from taking the steps you need to resolve this problem?

B. What are the irrational beliefs behind these fears?

C. Initiate a program of self-affirmation as presented in Self-Affirmations.

D. Use an imagery scenario in which you visualize shame and guilt as an object you packaged in a box. It is brought to a mountaintop and thrown off a cliff for good.

E. Affirm for yourself:

  • I deserve to solve this problem from my past.
  • I deserve to be good to myself
  • I deserve to have others be good to me, too.

F. Re-parent your inner child with statements that:

  • As a child, you deserved to be loved and cared for.
  • You were an innocent child who deserved to be treated better than you were.

What is your Guilty Pleasure? It may surprise you to know how many others share your delectation.

As a counseling psychologist, I lead my clients away from the concept of guilt. Responsibility is much better.
You are perfect.
Some of the things you do are excellent.
Others are OK.
The rest is the growing edges. There is no such thing as a mistake, only a learning opportunity.
So, instead of feeling guilty, take responsibility and grow.
